Background of the Study
Yoruba political discourse in Abeokuta has undergone significant transformation, reflecting shifts in societal values, media influence, and political dynamics. Rhetorical styles in this context encompass traditional oratory, contemporary speechwriting, and digital communication techniques. Over time, political figures have adapted their rhetorical strategies to address evolving audience expectations while maintaining cultural authenticity (Akinwale, 2023). Traditional elements such as proverbs, parallelism, and rhythmic delivery remain influential, yet they are increasingly blended with modern persuasive techniques to appeal to a broader, more diverse electorate. This evolution is marked by a dynamic interplay between heritage and innovation, where historical rhetorical forms are reinterpreted through contemporary lenses. Research indicates that effective rhetorical adaptation enhances political persuasion and fosters voter engagement (Ogunleye, 2024). This study examines the evolution of rhetorical styles in Yoruba political discourse in Abeokuta, exploring how these changes impact public opinion and political mobilization (Akinwale, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the evident transformation in Yoruba political rhetoric, there is a scarcity of focused research on how these evolving styles impact political communication in Abeokuta. Existing studies often address political discourse broadly without isolating the specific rhetorical adaptations that distinguish contemporary speeches from traditional oratory (Ogunleye, 2024). This gap limits our understanding of the effectiveness of modern rhetorical strategies in engaging voters and shaping public debate. The study aims to bridge this gap by analyzing the evolution of rhetorical styles in political discourse and assessing their impact on persuasion and voter mobilization.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document changes in rhetorical styles in Yoruba political discourse.

  2. To analyze the integration of traditional and modern rhetorical elements.

  3. To evaluate the impact on public engagement and persuasion.

Research Questions

  1. How have Yoruba political rhetorical styles evolved in Abeokuta?

  2. What traditional elements remain influential in modern speeches?

  3. How do these rhetorical changes affect voter engagement?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it sheds light on the evolution of rhetorical styles in Yoruba political discourse, providing insights that benefit political strategists, communication scholars, and policymakers. The findings will enhance our understanding of effective political communication and inform campaign strategies (Akinwale, 2023; Ogunleye, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the evolution of rhetorical styles in Yoruba political discourse in Abeokuta and does not cover other regions or non-political contexts.

Definitions of Terms

  • Rhetorical Styles: Distinctive techniques of persuasive speech and writing.

  • Political Discourse: Public communication related to political issues and governance.
